1204. [PORT ROYAL] . Fragment of a cartulary containing three (four) letters relating to the foundation of the abbey of Port-Royal. Pages 195 and 196 of the cartulary, lettering in red and blue, later handwritten notes in the margins. Very fine early 13th-century handwriting (Joursanvault 1039). 1) Abbots R. de Savignac (or Savigny) and Th. De Vaux (Vallierus) inform Eudes, bishop of Paris, that their house can accommodate 13 nuns. 2) The same two abbots inform Mathilde de Garlande and her sons that they agree the house can become an abbey. 3) Guillaume de La Ferté relinquishes his rights to Odon, bishop of Paris, and Mathilde de Marly (de Garlande). 4) Etienne de Savigny points out that their resources are insufficient to maintain 60 nuns. Odon de Sully (sometimes also called Eudes de Sully) bishop of Paris from 1197 to his death on July 13, 1208. He was one of the founders of the abbey of Port-Royal des Champs. Important document: One of these letters refers to the acquisition by Eudes, bishop of Paris, in 1204, of the site where the abbey was founded.
