Jean VIMENET (1914 -1999) - Lot 195
Jean VIMENET (1914 -1999)
Les joutes sétoises, Algiers 1953
Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left.
214 x 160 cm
Provenance: artist's descendants
Jean VIMENET was one of the very few "pupils" of Édouard Vuillard, with whom he painted a fresco for the League of Nations in Geneva (while still a student at the Beaux-Arts in Paris). He was also one of the very first collaborators, right up to the end, of cartoon director Paul Grimault (Le Roi et L'oiseau). His style has evolved rapidly since his stay in Algeria, which solarized his palette and helped him assert an increasingly singular expression. He gained in freedom. His work of this period emancipated himself from the tutelage of his masters, oscillating between a highly sensitive figurative and semi-abstract treatment in which the study of light, omnipresent, dictates its law to forms and themes.
