Late 19th century school - after Pierre Paul RUBENS - Lot 135
Late 19th century school - after Pierre Paul RUBENS
Portrait of Anne of Austria, Infanta of Spain, Queen of France and Navarre.
Oil on canvas, richly decorated and gilded wood and stucco frame (minor damage to frame).
115 x 78 cm (canvas). Restorations and repaints
Remake of the painting in the Louvre (105 x 93 cm). Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) took advantage of his stay at the French court in the winter of 1622 to paint portraits of the royal family. Some are on display at the Prado in Madrid, where they were sent by Queen Anne of Austria (1601-1666) to her family, and others at the Norton Simon Foundation in Los Angles. The Rijsk Museum in Amsterdam also holds a portrait of the Queen, dated 1625, while France has strangely lost its original paintings.
