1395. Paris - Brittany. 2 documents: - Lot 27
1395. Paris - Brittany. 2 documents: -Complaint against the nuns of the Abbey of Saint-Antoine who have improperly grazed one hundred pigs and other animals in a forest belonging to Jean IV of Brittany, Count of Montfort. Vellum 33 x 32 cm. 53 lines of fine handwriting, seal pending. - The Provost of Paris judges the dispute between the abbess of the convent of Saint-Antoine and the Duke of Brittany. November 13, 1395, parchment 24 x 25.5 cm (Joursanvault 1070 and 1072). Founded in 1198 on the site of today's Hôpital Saint-Antoine (Paris), the convent received donations from prominent families such as the Montforts between 1209 and 1218. In 1261, Louis IX confirmed a law passed by one of his predecessors, Louis VI Le Gros, on the vagrancy of pigs, but exempted the Abbey of Saint-Antoine, which was thus able to let its pigs go, provided they were equipped with a bell marked with a cross so that they could be recognized. An interesting historical document at a time of conflicting relations between Jean IV, Duke of Brittany, and Olivier de Clisson, Constable of France.
