GIOVIO (Paolo). Histoires de Paolo Iovio comois (...) sur le - Lot 111

GIOVIO (Paolo). Histoires de Paolo Iovio comois (...) sur les choses faictes et avenues de son temps en toutes les parties du monde. Paris, Jacques Du-Puys, 1570. 2 volumes in one folio, fawn calf, ornate ribbed spine, double gilt fillet on covers. (one bit broken: first cover detached, headbands ragged, leaves browned). Chronicle translated by Denys Sauvage. It recounts historical and diplomatic events from 1494 to 1547. Composed by Govio from around 1515, it was printed between 1550 and 1552 under the title Historiarum sui temporis. The first French translation dates from 1555-1558. The editions are incomplete, as books V to X (from the death of Charles VIII to the election of Leo X) are said to have been stolen from him by the Spaniards during the sack of Rome in 1527; and books XIX to XXIV were apparently never written, Giovio having confined himself to giving detailed summaries.
