Notes
Jean-Baptiste Oudry designed the Amusements champêtres series for the Manufacture royale de Beauvais, where it was first woven between 1730 and 1733. The set met with great success and was widely distributed in the second half of the 18th century. Inspired by Oudry's compositions, Jean-Baptiste Huet subsequently produced new cartoons for a renewed version of the hanging for the Aubusson factory. As Boccara notes, "in contrast to the scenes by J.-B. Oudry, Huet has always given his figures a more rustic character".
The first scene in the suite depicts young men enjoying a game of melted horse, also known as leapfrogging, in a rural landscape. In this game, one of the players acts as a "horse", maintaining his balance while another leans or pulls himself up onto his back.
