Sessue HAYAKAWA (1889–1973) - Lot 209
Sessue HAYAKAWA (1889–1973) Autumn Landscape with Trees Watercolor on paper, signed lower right with stamp. 46 x 38 cm Ref: Sessue Hayakawa was one of the highest-paid actors in the early days of the Hollywood studio system, rivaling Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks; his extravagant lifestyle contributed to his legend. A cultured scholar who bridged cultures, he had studied political economy at the University of Chicago and was a Zen grand master, actor, and producer. In 1937, he came to France to star in several films and found himself forced to remain on French soil due to the declaration of war. During those difficult times, he joined the Resistance and survived, among other things, by selling his watercolors. After the liberation, his contribution to the war effort was duly recognized. He landed the role of Colonel Saito in *The Bridge on the River Kwai*, which, by his own admission, was the greatest role of his life. In 2007, the Museum of Modern Art in New York organized a retrospective of his work.
